The Tokyo Marathon Project
It’s now 17 years since I took up running, and 15 years since I completed my first Tokyo Marathon.
Little did I know then how it would come to change my life.
Below you’ll find a selection of posts highlighting the technology I’ve used, and the adventures I’ve had as I’ve shared the experience first hand of running Japan’s biggest race.
Joseph's 15th annual live-streamed

J-WAVE Radio Design Thinking Workshop
Back in April, myself and the Make It Creative team were delighted to have the opportunity to run a Design Thinking workshop for Tokyo’s J-wave radio.
The challenge for the participants – a group of young radio enthusiasts – was to come up with ideas for new radio programs, and then record a 1 minute trailer for their programs.
Microsoft YouthSpark IoT Workshop
It’s been a busy few months here for the Tame in Tokyo! Following a fantastic relaxing few weeks in the UK, I teamed up with 3 good friends (collectively we work together as an NPO, 'Make It Creative') on producing a series of workshops for Microsoft's YouthSpark...
The Gadget Show
People often ask me what I do for a living. Whilst I may respond by saying something about video production and digital marketing, the truth is that I’m a karaoke singer for hire – at least that’s what you’ll believe if you watch the Channel 5 TV (UK) program ’The Gadget Show’.
The Tokyo Marathon 2015
The Tokyo Marathon has become a core part of my life. It’s an annual celebration of the close relationship I have with the city and its people. It’s the day when friends are reunited, friends 7 years in the making. Whilst I might only see them for a few seconds once a year, they bond is strong, and is carried throughout the whole year when I meet many of them at other events, in trains, on the streets. It’s so much more than a 42km race.
Run311 2015
This morning I took part in Run311 - an international movement raising money for the ongoing recover in Tohoku, whilst also serving to commemorate those who were lost in the disaster; next Wednesday is the 4th anniversary. I first heard about Run311 when I visited...
BS Fuji TV: Birth of the Cool
Recent months have seen a huge increase in the number of TV programs that take as a theme the image of Japan in the eyes of foreigners. It’s one of those trends that you’ll see manifested almost daily (reminds me of when home improvement shows took off in the UK). You’ll either have shows focused purely on what foreigners think, or more commonly, shows that have a foreign guest on the panel providing their opinion on a topic.
NHK World: Featured Tokyo Artist
Back in September 2014 I was contacted by NHK World regarding a couple of programs that they were planning focused on Tokyo-based foreign artists. Broadcast worldwide on Satellite TV, online, via their mobile apps, the program, Tokyo Eye, introduces various aspects of...
TV: Art of Running Introduced on NHK Education
If you start seeing little children running the streets of Japan whilst carefully checking their routes using a GPS tracker, it'll be thanks to NHK's morning kids show 'Shakiin' which today had a section all about funny ways of running. Featured alongside a backwards...
PechaKucha Tokyo 120: Olympus OPC and LED Light Trails
Photos from the official PechaKucha Tokyo 120 album by Michael Holmes ’Twas a few nights before Christmas, and once again the Tame was given the opportunity to grace the stage of PechaKucha Tokyo. For my 4th PechaKucha presentation I wanted to push the limits, to...
Merry Christmas! How about building yourself a Christmas Hat?!
One project I’ve been involved in is the creation of a new website to support developers and makers to use the new Intel Edison micro computer. This tiny device has a full Linux operating system on it, plus built-in bluetooth and wifi – making it the perfect wearable computer to put in my Christmas hat!
The hat comes complete with 180 LEDs whose colour can be controlled via any web browser, and a motorised mobile that has two little Christmas elves spinning around the top!
